The Spring Runway Trends We Can’t Get Enough Of

The 2021 spring summer runway presented an interesting mix of key trends. While the world is collectively experiencing a pandemic together, fashion is showing us how it literally doesn’t sleep. In fact, it is a welcome respite from the state of the world, and the ss2021 fashion trends demonstrate this. Fashion is thriving even when we’re all stuck indoors. We’re loving what we’re seeing – from reimagining netting, to spring dresses and tailored fits. Here’s a look at our top picks.

1.Netting It All

The concept of netting exploded this season from net dresses, tops, bags and skirts. Balenciaga developed this technique by adding elements of sustainability by creating a net dress entirely from basketball hoop netting. Burberry took it a step further through bedazzling their nets with crystals and stones. Simone Rocha elevated the trend by adding pearls and beads. This season the trend of adding a net skirt or dress will be ubiquitous. What makes this trend so appealing is how easily the consumer can replicate it and how well it can transform their daily outfits. The addition of hardware and crystals will be what will distinguish each look from another. Adorned netting on jackets, bags, tights, and dresses will be a stand out key in spring’s trends. We might even see an increase of net shopping bags made from delicate yet durable textiles such as nylon.

2.Bejeweled

This season felt like a chance to play around and lighten things up. Beads, buttons, rivets and stones, were all used to decorate looks. In contrast to past seasons that showed pieces completely encrusted with crystals, this season was about using adornment as a way of decorating looks rather than making the whole look. The key will be to use specially cut or designed accessories such as pearl glass buttons placed on a few pieces in the Chanel show, or mixing and matching beads to decorate a specific part of a clothing as shown by Gabriela Hearst. This is a trend geared towards the consumer looking for special pieces to add to her wardrobe, as a way to upgrade simple outfits.

3.Spring Dresses

The staple floral dresses of spring and summer have been given a new look. Bold floral prints filled the runways showing an array of soft and strong shades of colour from dandelion yellow to vermilion red. Valentino showed a collection of maxi dresses with striking floral patterns which will probably set the direction for spring dresses. There was a clear contrast of bold and soft florals to meet each consumer’s needs. Movement in fabric was key with attention to detail. There were variations of floral patterns from the American brand Rodarte which focused on belted and buttoned dresses, to Chinese designer Yuhan Wang who showed a collection of romantic dresses made from light and delicate fabrics.

4.Metallic Fever

The resurgence of metallics is here again. The trend has been elevated through the mixing of metallic fabric with plain or contrasting fabric such as cotton. This trend was most prevalent at Isabel Marant who gave her designs a cool look by turning everyday pieces into special items by making them out of colourful and bold metallics. At Burberry they introduced the metallics through beading which also turned normal pieces into stand-out looks. Paco Rabanne added more of a shimmery metallic look to their pieces showing the versatility of the textile by presenting it in gathered dresses with knots and twists. Metallic fabrics are a good addition to any collection because they can help transform the mundane into something special.

5.Tailored To Fit

Every season we look forward to seeing how women’s suits, jackets and tailoring will be interpreted. This is one part of a woman’s wardrobe that is continuously updated. Workwear has gone through several transformations over the years and for this season it has come back to comfort. For Spring/Summer 2021 it was all about simplicity and ease. The detailing was in the cut. Sportmax showed a variety of looks based on tailoring emphasising the current desire to wear pieces that look and feel effortless. The universal goal was to present comfortable, non-restrictive work outfits that can be easily worn from a corporate brunch to a meeting. Elements of menswear could be seen through the choice of fabric such as the pin stripe textile at Michael Kors and at the Dutch brand Baum Und Pferdgarten. Tailoring has taken on a new meaning for this season.

How to Glue Rhinestones so They Stay Put!

Rhinestones are really versatile! They can be used anywhere and everywhere a little extra glam is called for. But do you know how to glue rhinestones in the right way? If not, you’ll be forever reattaching them. And seeing your beautiful craft projects literally falling apart.

To avoid these kinds of craft disasters, read this guide on how to apply rhinestones. Follow the steps and you can ensure perfectly applied rhinestones every time.

Choose the right glue on jewels

Firstly, you need to make sure you have the right rhinestones for the job. You can get rhinestones made from crystal, glass, acrylic or resin.

Acrylic rhinestones come in a huge range of colours, shapes and sizes. You’re really spoilt for choice! Crystal rhinestones are more sparkly. But they’re also heavier and more expensive.

Whichever material you choose, make sure your rhinestone has a flat (rather than a pointed) back. This is essential if you’re planning to glue them into place.

You can also find hot fix flat back rhinestones. These tend to be made from crystal rather than acrylic. They come with a heat-activated glue already applied to the flat side of the gem.

Factoring in the practicalities is important. But you also need to be sure your chosen rhinestones fit well with your design and the overall look of the piece you’re creating.

Choose the best glue for rhinestones

Different materials require different types of glue. So the rhinestone glue you choose will depend upon where you’re planning to fix your rhinestones.

Will you be attaching your gems to fabric garments like jeans, shirts, dresses or shoes? Will you be sticking them onto a smartphone or a purse? Or do you want to use them in nail and face art designs?

Once you have a clear idea of what surface you’ll be sticking the rhinestones to, you can choose an appropriate rhinestone glue:

Beacon Gem-Tac.

This is a permanent rhinestone glue that can be used on most surfaces, including fabric. It’s a great all-rounder.

E6000 Craft.

The E6000 is an industrial strength adhesive. It works best if you’re sticking rhinestones to a hard surface, like glass, plastic or metal. It doesn’t work so well on fabrics.

G-S Hypo Cement.

This glue comes with a great little applicator tip, making it the perfect option for fine detail work. G-S Hypo Cement works well on metal, plastic and ceramics. But if you’re working with garments, you’ll need to seek out the brand’s fabric formula.

Heat gun.

If you’re using hot fix rhinestones, the easiest way to apply them is with a hotfix applicator, or heat gun. With different sized tips, you can attach rhinestones of all sizes.

Prepare your workspace

Open the windows or work in a well-ventilated area as some glues produce unpleasant fumes. Also consider the surface you’ll be working on. Cover with a large piece of cardboard if necessary.

Gather other useful tools

It takes longer than you might think for rhinestone glue to dry properly.

For hard surfaces – like metal, plastic, glass, etc. – we recommend you leave glue to dry for at least 24 hours. If you’re gluing onto fabric, leave it three to five days before washing or wearing a garment.

Troubleshooting: How do you keep rhinestones from falling off?

If you’re following all of the steps above, your rhinestones should stay exactly where you want them to, particularly if you’re gluing onto a hard surface.

It can be a little trickier with fabrics, however. Consider choosing sew on rhinestones if you’re fixing gems to fabric that will be worn and washed regularly.

How to Make a Glitzy Rhinestone Clock

From big furniture pieces to smaller homeware accessories, crafters around the world are proving just how easy it is to give a basic (and fairly boring) IKEA item a little extra personality.

If you’re a craft retailer or crafter seeking out a new rhinestone crafts project, why not transform a simple IKEA wall clock into a glitzy rhinestone clock?

It’s a unique but very easy DIY to do. And the cool clock you end up with is dramatically different from the plain, white clock you start with!

Ready to get started? Here’s everything you need to know:

How to upcycle an IKEA STOMMA into a glitzy rhinestone clock

Follow this easy step by step guide and you’ll have a statement rhinestone clock hanging on your wall in no time!

What you’ll need

An IKEA STOMMA wall clock
Needle nose pliers
Flatback acrylic rhinestones in a color scheme of your choice
Glue for your rhinestones
A painter’s palette
A paintbrush
Acrylic paint in black and gold shades

What to do

Step 1. Carefully prize off the clear plastic that covers your clock face. Then (also very carefully!) remove the hands of the clock and put them to one side.

Step 2. Use the black acrylic to paint the clock face and surround. Wait for the paint to dry.

Step 3. Use the gold acrylic to neatly paint around the edge of the clock surround. Take the blue clock hand and paint this gold too. Wait for the paint to dry.

Step 4. This next stage requires a steady hand! And a bit of preparation. Before you start to glue rhinestones into place, think about your design and exactly where you want your rhinestones to go.

Then, take the rhinestone glue and put small blobs of glue onto one of the raised numbers of the clock face. Using your needle nose pliers, place rhinestones neatly on top of the glue.

Repeat this stage for all numbers and hour markers around the clock face until your rhinestones are securely attached to the clock.

Step 5. Now it’s time to put the clock back together. Carefully replace the clock hands and clear plastic cover. You’re now ready to hang your DIY rhinestone clock!

Button shanks have both an aesthetic and practical purpose. They need to look good and fit with the style of your design. But they also need to work in terms of your production process, especially if you’re sewing buttons by machine.

What is a shank?

In the simplest of terms, a button shank is the means by which a button is attached to a garment. And there are lots of different button shank types.

Different button shank types

Thread shank

A thread shank is used for flat, shankless buttons. These buttons are available in either two hole or four hole varieties. The thread shank is created as the button is sewn onto the garment.

Built-in button shank

Buttons without holes in their surface have a built-in button shank. This shank is a loop on the back of the button through which thread is sewn in order to attach the button to a garment.

The shank can be molded onto the back of the button during production. Alternatively, it can be constructed as a separate piece and later fixed onto the button back.

There are a number of different built-in button shank types. Here are a few:

Tunnel shank.
Tunnel shank buttons are so-called because the shank seems to tunnel through the underside of the button. These buttons attach very closely to a garment, which makes them perfect for very fine fabrics and garment embellishment.

Round, metal shank.

Here are the five different shank measurements you need to take in order to program a button sewing machine.

A: Internal height of shank loop, measured from button back to underside of the shank loop.

B: Internal length of shank loop.

C: Total height of shank loop, measured from button back to top of shank.

D: Total external length of shank loop.

E: Total width of shank loop.

Standardized shank sizes

The size of a button shank often corresponds to the size of a button. They can usually be separated into two different categories.

Buttons of 21mm and above use one standardized size of shank. Buttons of 18mm and less use a smaller standardized size of shank.

The Japanese standard uses a third button shank size for buttons smaller than 11.5mm. A smaller shank on a smaller button looks more elegant.
